Balance

A group of young people journeyed to Gloucestershire in August 2024 to participate in a residency at Highgrove Traditional Crafts Centre and King Charles’ magnificent Highgrove Garden. It was an opportunity to embrace being in nature and to look closely at the natural forms around them. During creative activities, they were encouraged to slow down, observe, and immerse themselves in the serene countryside. By focusing on the repetitions, patterns, colour and textures found in nature, the young people became more aware of their environment whilst also developing new and exciting craft skills.

The young people have continued to develop and refine their skills through working with artists and makers at the Brady Centre. The artworks shown strike a balance between natural forms found in the city landscape as well as those they experienced in the countryside.

The exhibition featured multiple techniques: cyanotype, block printing, ink and charcoal drawing, weaving and embroidery. The young people embarked on a very experimental and explorative journey to find their own individuality, style and approach whilst also considering the theme of the exhibition in order to convey a strong message.
