Our Mission
A Team Arts Education believes that all young people have creative potential and that engaging with the arts at any level is a rewarding, as well as fun, experience.
A Team’s various workshops, projects and courses allow young people to express themselves and experiment. They may just want to socialise, enjoy trying out a new activity, or aspire to a career in the arts. We believe diversity drives creativity. This is reflected in our staff team and participants. We are welcoming and inclusive, and strongly believe that our programmes should be free to attend.
The East End of London has for centuries been the centre of the ‘Rag’ trade, which has supported generations of migrants. Many young people who have worked with A Team Arts have parents who have worked in factories or sewed at home, passing on skills related to the fashion and textiles industry. These young people can aspire be the designers and fashion leaders of the future. To this end we have established links and strong partnerships with Further Education and Higher Education institutions as well as with industry professionals.
We have built on our existing relationships with Tower Hamlets schools and take an active role in Tower Hamlets Artist Teachers forum (THAT) along with local partners such as Tower Hamlets Art and Music Service (THAMES). These partnerships are key to achieving our aims.
A Team Arts is committed to the environment and aim to reduce waste by re-using and re-cycling as much as possible. We have returned to the ‘make do and mend’ ethos of the past to encourage young people to learn traditional craft skills from their older relatives and re-invent them.
Crafting techniques such as weaving, knitting and sewing can have a therapeutic effect on people of all ages and we run intergenerational workshops in a constructive and nurturing environment.
We inspire young people by introducing them to a range of artists, designers and artforms through visits to art galleries and museums as well as to Central St Martins UAL to experience an art college environment. Our courses and support have resulted in many of our young people progressing onto various art and design Foundation diplomas and Undergraduate degrees across the country.
