Highgrove
2024
We collaborated with the Kings Foundation and Kaia Howard, the manager of the Traditional Craft Centre at Barley Court, to plan a five-day residential. The participants stayed at the local boarding school, Westonbirt, and attended workshops at Highgrove. Ten young people explored the local countryside, recording their ideas in sketchbooks.
King’s Foundation staff introduced them to new craft techniques, such as harvesting plants for dye baths, bundle dyeing, and using petals and flowers on fabric and paper. These samples were developed using hand embroidery. The group also experimented with clay and mould making and basket weaving.
The trip positively impacted their well-being and mental health by allowing them to enjoy nature and the countryside’s silence, contrasting with their city life. Participants’ work was further developed during the Autumn term and culminated in three exhibitions in 2025 and 2026.
